The opening conference in Greece: “Creating equal participation spaces for Roma inclusion”

The launch of the CoSpIRom European Program: Common Spaces for the Integration of Roma took place on November 26 at the University of Thessaly. The workshop began with a welcome speech from the Vice-Rector for Research and Lifelong Learning of the University of Thessaly, PR. Ioanna Laliotou, who welcomed more than 100 participants of the workshop, mainly educators, young Roma, students/ prospective teachers.

The coordinator of the project, Pr. Charoula Stathopoulou of the University of Thessaly, after welcoming the participants, presented the core idea of the project, the objectives, the activities to be implemented, as well as the expected results, explaining why the project objectives meet the needs of the two communities.

Then, journalist George Trantos, drawing on press reports where a negative image of the Roma is depicted, highlighted the role of the media in reproducing stereotypes for this group of people and thus maintaining inequalities.

Next was the Head of the Local Police department, Mr. Vasilis Karaiskos, who focused on the social role of the police. He grounded his position, invoking the fact that the Magnesia Police Department has moved next to the Roma settlement; an action, which was linked to their own efforts to improve communication with the Roma community and the ultimate goal of developing a harmonious coexistence.

The representative of KEKPA-DIEK of the Municipality of Volos, Mr. Nikos Antonakis, presented the initiative for the development of a wider and dynamic cooperation network in Volos. A network that is made up of structures and organizations concerned with the integration of Roma students that effectively supports, through specific actions, their education. He also linked the goals of the network to those of CoSpIRom.

Finally, the professor of University of Thessaly Christos Goravis, as a long time coordinator of the project for education of Roma children, presented this experience and linked it with the current project, which emerged as a natural consequence of this experience. In particular, he referred to the ineffectiveness of separate interventions in the two communities and the need to create equal participation spaces in order to respond more effectively to the demand for Roma inclusion in the broaden society.

The presentations covered various aspects of the project, which are depicted, explicitly or not, in the description, while the diverse background of the speakers enlightened many aspects of the issue. Subsequently, questions were raised, mainly for clarifying purposes, and the meeting ended with a fruitful discussion among speakers, teachers, school principals, media representatives and young Roma who not only asked questions – mainly to the police representative – but also made suggestions based on their experience. Perhaps the most important part of this discussion was precisely the active role of young Roma. It was realized, from the open discussion, that the topic of the meeting and, therefore, the project concerned not only the members of the research team, but the whole of the local community who displayed great interest in the issue of mitigating stereotypes about Roma and shaping inclusive communities.

Στο πρόγραμμα συμμετέχουν φορείς από Ελλάδα (Πανεπιστήμιο Θεσσαλίας, ΚΕΚΠΑ ΔΙΕΚ Δήμου Βόλου), Ιταλία (University of Pisa, UNIPI), Ρουμανία (West University of Timisoara, WUT).
